Trostyanets inhabitants very honored composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky because here he wrote one of the world most famous overtures "The Storm". In the former estate of Prince Alexey Golitsyn arrange music festivals in honor of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. In Trostyanets central park in May 1984 there was created Monument to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was born on 7th of May 1840 in the Urals in Votkinsk. As a young boy Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky often listen to the songs of workers in the village. Later in memoirs about the childhood he emphasized the importance of early acquaintance with folk songs.
Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky soon began to study music. His success in piano playing so fast that when the family moved to Saint Petersburg - he was already known as a good pianist.

At ten years old Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky was sent to law school where pupils were prepared for the public service. The school is more interested for Tchaikovsky not becuase of compulsory subjects but because of music lessons during which he became acquainted with the works of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven.

In 1859 Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky successfully have finished the law school and entered the service of Ministry of Justice but soon came to believe that the life of an official is not for him. He studied music theory and in 1862 entered the newly opened Saint Petersburg Conservatory which was headed by Anton Rubinstein.

In the summer of 1864 when 24-year-old Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky came to Trostyanets where he was invited by friend Prince Alexey Golitsyn to rest in estate in the picturesque gorge "Neskuchnoye". Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky wrote in Trostyantse his first symphonic work - the overture "The Storm" to the drama of Alexander Ostrovsky. Young composer was already an avid fan of the great Russian playwrighter.

Due to illness Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky asked German Larosh to transfer the finished overture to Anton Rubinstein for review. Unfortunatelly Anton Rubinstein had the unflattering opinion about the overture "The Storm". Criticism from Anton Rubinstein caused that during the life of the composer the overture "The Storm" was never performed and the manuscript was kept in his private archive.

The first performance of the overture "The Storm" took place after the death of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on 24th of February 1896 in Saint Petersburg during Third Russian Symphonic Concert.
